Ganciclovir is a potent antiviral medication primarily indicated for the treatment and prevention of severe cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections. It is most commonly prescribed for CMV retinitis in immunocompromised individuals, particularly patients with advanced HIV/AIDS, as well as for CMV disease prevention in transplant recipients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy. Ganciclovir works by selectively inhibiting viral DNA synthesis, effectively halting the replication of the virus.
